SONY MAY RELEASE THE PLAYSTATION 5 PRO NEXT YEAR

Sony is reportedly in development of a PlayStation 5 Pro, set to launch in late 2024 according to Insider Gaming, citing unnamed sources. While Sony has made no official announcement, a recently-published patent by PlayStation architect Mark Cerny suggests that the PS5 Pro will focus on improved ray tracing abilities, along with the typical visual and performance improvements of a PS Pro model.

The rumored launch date for the PS5 Pro would put it at three years after the launch of the PlayStation 5, similar to the three-year gap between the PlayStation 4 and the PS4 Pro. However, the COVID-19 pandemic and ongoing chip shortage could complicate things for Sony. It's also worth noting that many developers are still releasing games on both PS4 and PS5, so Sony may want to hold off on launching the PS5 Pro until there's a greater demand for the console.

Additionally, Insider Gaming claims that a new version of the PS5 with a detachable disc drive via USB-C could be launched this year, potentially phasing out the current model. However, two new PlayStation models launching within a year of each other seems unlikely.

Regardless, the PlayStation 5 has already been a massive success for Sony, with skyrocketing sales and the company becoming AMD's biggest customer. And while the launch of a PS5 Pro is still just a rumor, it's exciting for gamers to think about what kind of improvements and new features the upgraded console could bring.
